Most people would agree that only spending 7 nights or so in the US probably doesn’t give you enough time to visit all the coolest attractions, this is why I always recommend a two week minimum to my friends when they’re making bookings. The only trouble is that 14 nights can become very expensive if you factor in other costs like food, tickets and transport, so knowing how to keep prices down should be your top priority.
Luckily, I’ve been over to see Uncle Sam on numerous occasions, so I’ve picked up some handy tips and tricks that you might find to be of some use. In this article I’m going to focus on long breaks in California, but who knows, if it’s well received I might fill you in on how to achieve the same level of savings in other areas. Anyway, take a moment or two to read through the rest of this page and see if you can learn a thing or two.
The Advantages Of Booking A Last Minute Flight
At the time I wrote this article (November 2013), it was possible to get a flight to California from the UK for around £480 if you were okay with a last minute booking. Admittedly, this technique isn’t for everyone and some people do prefer to have more stability when making travel arrangements, but if you want to save the most money, this is what you need to do. Booking in advance will increase the price by almost disgusting proportions, in fact, if I wanted to get a flight in only 1 months time, the price rises to over £1,100. So that’s a £620 saving by just leaving it until the day before you want to travel.
Only Using The Most Reputable Accommodation Providers
Though you might think the most established hotel companies would be the most expensive, this isn’t generally true. Last year I booked a hotel for 14 nights with Venere in San Francisco and found their prices to be the most reasonable by a longshot. You see, accommodation providers tend to offer a much better deal when you book more than 14 consecutive nights, so don’t worry, it won’t cost double the amount you’d expect to pay for 7.
Getting Impressive Group Discounts
As with anything else in this world, spending more money means you get better discounts, so ensuring you travel in a large group will always result in costs being kept down. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a whole fortnight with your travel partners – far from it, but it does mean each individual could end up saving a considerable amount, especially on airlines, transfers and attraction tickets.
So now you know the ins and outs of how to travel to California for a decent break, what’s stopping you from making arrangements? All you need to do is book around 2 ½ weeks off work and sit at the computer with your credit card in hand waiting for the perfect last minute deal – simple.
Anyway, I’m off to plan another holiday myself, I think perhaps I might try New Orleans this time – I’ll let you know how I get on…
